Beth Emmott

This site is about my personal work. It began as a blog named “Gardens, my non digital world ” when I had to learn to make one for a client and has evolved into what you see today.

I’m a designer/educator working in Philadelphia, PA and teaching graphic and digital design at Philadelphia University’s School of Design+Media.

I graduated from Moore College of Art and Design, with a BFA, majoring in Graphic Design and from Syracuse with an MA in Illustration. After working for several years with the influential photographer, Seymour Mednick, I opened a commercial photography/design studio with my husband/partner, Bob Emmott, where I am responsible for all studio design as well as designing web sites for clients.

I work in many areas: photography, video, fiber, printmaking, and book arts to name a few. My work in all these various disciplines rely on the design studies I had as an undergraduate and it is all about exploring and telling stories. I want the viewer to feel that something has, is, or will be happening in my images and to become involved in thinking about what that was, is, or will be.

My blog has a life of its own, sometimes about my work and thoughts and struggles therein, but also about friends and family, my garden and anything else going on in my life. I have a son, Kevan who is married to Erin and they have Cooper and Fletcher—all lights of my life! They appear in my blog as do my friends, some with whom I go on trips and some with whom I have, what are known as, “Rude Dinners”. My Mom’s an artist and she appears in here from time to time as do a host of others.

Some of my favorite things after the above family and friends are drawing, travel—especially road trips—good food and wine, working with fibers—I had a life as a weaver and still like to spin my own yarn, it’s meditative—and figuring out things in general. The figuring out is where the computer comes in as, to me, it’s all about figuring out, and figuring out and figuring out . . . and it all ends up in my work.
