
{"id":690,"date":"2010-08-18T06:25:11","date_gmt":"2010-08-18T10:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bethemmott.com\/?p=690"},"modified":"2013-05-24T17:38:57","modified_gmt":"2013-05-24T21:38:57","slug":"ireland-connemara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bethemmott.com\/blog\/ireland-connemara\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland to Ballycastle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning we woke to a bright sunny day and as we were getting breakfast, it began to rain with the sun out\u2014sure enough my first Irish Rainbow\u2014right over our cottage!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bethemmott.com\/blog\/extra\/images\/ireland\/rainbow.jpg\" alt=\"Rainbow\" \/><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Irish Rainbow<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>I don\u2019t have internet access where I\u2019m living so these posts may be a day late.<br \/>\nYESTERDAY<br \/>\nLots of driving through a incredible country side\u2014The Connemara, on the west coast of Ireland. Hedges 10 feet high of fuchsia, mountain sides glowing with golden Broom and purple Heather, orange flowers everywhere. )The roads are very narrow!<br \/>\nLeft Clifden and drove the \u201cSky Road\u201d which goes high in the hills overlooking Ballymakill Harbor and the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bethemmott.com\/blog\/extra\/images\/ireland\/narrowRoad.jpg\" alt=\"narrow road\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bethemmott.com\/blog\/extra\/images\/ireland\/castle.jpg\" alt=\"castle\" \/><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Very Narrow roads and even a castle!<\/em><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bethemmott.com\/blog\/extra\/images\/ireland\/pony1.jpg\" alt=\"ponies\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bethemmott.com\/blog\/extra\/images\/ireland\/ponys.jpg\" alt=\"ponies\" \/><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Lots of ponies\u2014this is a great area for ponies!<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>There are a number of handcraft shops but most are pretty touristy, BUT, Cottage Handcrafts in Mayard, Co. Galway is far and above the others I saw.<\/p>\n<p>Then back to the N59 through Letterfreck to Leenaun\u2014more magic \u2014lots of sheep, lots and lots and lots of sheep! At Leenaun we stopped at The Sheep and Wool Center where they had sheep shearing, spinning and weaving  demos. I bought a small bag of fleece to spin when I get home. from a Manx Loaghtan, which is a rare four horned sheep \u2013 pretty natural tans and browns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bethemmott.com\/blog\/extra\/images\/ireland\/shearing.jpg\" alt=\"sheep sjearing\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bethemmott.com\/blog\/extra\/images\/ireland\/sheep.jpg\" alt=\"sheep\" \/><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Lots of sheep\u2014this is a great area for sheep!<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>By then we were running late and so we headed straight to Ballycastle with a quick stop in Westport to find a mac machine, get gas and call Ballinglen.<\/p>\n<p>We met Una, who took us to our cottage, I unpacked while Bob drove back to Ballycastle to get supplies for supper. He went to Polk\u2019s which has everything. It\u2019s a grocery store and bar combo and meets most basic needs. he came back with wine, pork chops, carrots and parsnips, and, my mother will be pleased, Irish potatoes.
